Calibrating a pressure gauge is a crucial aspect as it guarantees the safety and excellence of your work staff working around the pressure gauge, for the medium which flows inside the pressure gauge. The calibration of a pressure gauge may sound insignificant but its presence can have a convincing impact on both safety and audits. This blog will thoroughly educate you on why to calibrate and how to calibrate pressure gauges.
WHAT IS CALIBRATION?
First off, what does calibration mean? It is basically a comparison of references with a known error margin against any instrument, say pressure gauge in this case. If the instrument does not match the reference, we regulate it to reach the desired accuracy at its closest.
It is noteworthy that that reference should have more accuracy in comparison to the pressure gauge which is to be calibrated. In order to calibrate the pressure gauge perfectly, we must track down the value throughout the experiment, zero-point, intermediate values, and full-scale values. To ensure that the reference is reliable, a digital pressure gauge is required which has an average accuracy of about 0.1% to 0.05%.
WHY CALIBRATE YOUR PRESSURE GAUGE?
Here at SWBM, our experts are trying their level best to offer the most accurate and robust pressure gauges, which tends to sustain their accuracy for a fairly long period of time. If not the case, then the pressure gauge will soon start experiencing drift. Drift means that the apparatus will start losing the accuracy that it has initially been approved upon. But at SWBM we truly believe that the better the quality, the longer it will last, both the pressure gauge and our customers’ trust. However, pressure gauges must be calibrated on a regular basis so that accuracy is maintained. It is often recommended that the pressure gauges should be calibrated before installation.
WHEN TO CALIBRATE YOUR PRESSURE GAUGE?
Your pressure gauge needs maintenance by the manufacturer at least once a year or depending on how much it is in use. In the technical world it is often said, “ instruments should be tested to ensure reliability in the working conditions and recalibrated at regular intervals. Test procedures for instruments and the intervals between recalibration should be approved by the administration”. This tells how much importance proper calibration holds. Even after recalibration, its appropriateness should be checked by professionals.
HOW TO CALIBRATE YOUR PRESSURE GAUGE?
First things first, the needed equipment. All you need is a pressure hand pump (available in several ranges), a digital pressure gauge that will act as a reference, adopters to change the threading, and of course the pressure gauge which will be tested.
First, you take the pressure pump, which is manually operated with the help of leavers, fix the digital pressure gauge at the top of the pump, and join the calibrated pressure gauge with the adopter and the end of the pressure pump.
When everything is linked, you close the air escape valve on the pressure pump by turning it to the right side. By doing so, no air can withdraw the pump, and the pressure can be sent to the gauge, without any loss. Then gradually turn on the digital pressure gauge and start with adding pressure. If your apparatus is performing justly, then you will be able to visually see the same amount of psi on both the digital as well as the analog pressure gauge.
Repeat the whole process at least 3 or 4 times at different set points on the tested pressure gauge. Let’s say you have a pressure gauge that needs to be calibrated from 0 to 100 bar. Then you should test and analyze pressure at 20, 40, 60and 80bar. If the accuracy of the calibrated pressure gauge is less than initially guaranteed by the manufacturer, then your pressure gauge qualifies to be called a certified pressure gauge with accurate calibration.
